The Mutherload has a unique but familiar sound; a modern blend of country, blues, gospel and soul. This band shifts back to the rootsy vibe of Electric Blue and the Kozmik Truth but takes it’s own direction with an Americana flavor that feels like Saturday night juke joint at Sunday morning church. Utilizing the slide guitar, Hammond organ and spirited backup singers, the Mutherload accomplishes some powerful and uplifting music.
This band is fronted by former EBKT & Ciderhouse guitarist, Gary Dylan Phelps. Gary’s playing is powerful and emotional, his vocals are raw and honest, his song writing is current but has a flavor from the past, echoing masters such as Ray Charles, The Band, Robert Johnson and Johnny Cash. The Mutherload’s big sound starts with the infectious swampy rhythm section:
Justin Tomsovic on the kit and Nick Fields on the four string. Guitarist turned keyboardist Erik Morgan playing the Hammond and Rhodes and top it all off, the back up vocals. Two voices come together to stir your soul and lift you out of your seat: Callie K. (EBKT & Ciderhouse) and Tom Shields (Sweetwind & Tom Shields project).
